At no point does the author direct present a refutation of God, but more explains group dynamic theory of organized religion itself and that without religion people are capable of keeping thier minds without an overarching deity to keep them in line. Very interesting read. His premise is that, similarly to how a virus' goal is to infect people and create an environment where it can proprogate, religion does the same thing in the same way. He makes analogies between how viruses behave and how religion behaves throughout the book. I would have called it "The Religion Virus," not the God Virus because what he attributes to God should be attributed to religion. This book definitely makes you take a step back and examine what you've been taught in your religion from an outsider perspective. It helps strengthen your BS filter. I usually shy away from the WWII, Germany, Holocaust Genre but I found this book to be engaging, serious without being depressing and it kept me turning the pages. Readable but average as thrillers go. Quite a good atmospheric picture of what Berlin must have been like in 1939. A compelling story about a English journalist in 1938 Berlin. Tied to the country by family and feeling an instinctive, human need to help those who are unfairly persecuted, John Russell is drawn into an increasingly complex situation between countries and organisations who are desperate for more information on each other and their slow yet inevitable preparations for war. This book is deceptively simple in its execution and portrayal of a pre-war Germany few of us really have ever considered. As a member of the foreign press corps, Russell travels around relatively unrestricted and it is this freedom which allows us to see the anxieties of everyday people - a mirror in fact of Russell's own newspaper stories about German life.
