Eventually he escapes, onlyto be recaptured - but this time voluntarily - by a guru. The two of them leaveMalgudi and return to the hills where they pass their days in sweetphilosophical discourse until old age overtakes Raja and he is forced to give uphis freedom for ever.

(less)A WRITER'S NIGHTMARE: SELECTED ESSAYS 1958-1988Â
Narayan, India€™s greatest English language novelist\R.K.
Narayan is perhaps better known as a novelist, but his essays are as delightful and enchanting as his stories and novels. Introducing this selection of essays, Narayan writes, €˜I have always been drawn to the personal essay in which you see something of the author himself apart from the theme.
..
the scope for such a composition is unlimited€”the mood may be sombre, hilarious or satirical and the theme may range from what the author notices from his window to what he sees in his waste-paper basket to a world cataclysm.€™ A Writer€™s Nightmare is the marvellous result of Narayan€™s liking for the personal essay.
In the book, he tackles subjects such as weddings, mathematics, coffee, umbrellas, teachers, newspapers, architecture, monkeys, the caste system, lovers€”all sorts of topics, simple and not so simple, which reveal the very essence of India.\€˜Narayan wakes in me a spring of gratitude, for he has offered me a second home.
Without him I could never have known what it is like to be Indian€™\€”Graham Greene\
(less)A Town Called Malgudi
Narayan enthralled and entertained generations of readers with his deftly etched characters, his uniquely stylized language and his wry sense of humour. A storyteller par excellence, Narayan€™s greatest achievement perhaps lies in creating and peopling the imagined landscapes of a town called Malgudi, located somewhere in South India, which has come alive in story after story in such a way that it has now become a part of modern Indian folklore

Narayan's story combines Hindu mysticism with ripe Malgudi comedy, viewing human absurdities through the eyes of a wild animal and revealing how, quite unexpectedly, Raja finds sweet companionship and peace. Similar Title.

(less)Memories Of Malgudi
Narayan’s novels have delighted and captivated millions of readers the world over with their depiction of people, places and events set in the fictional town of Malgudi. Memories of Malgudi brings together five unforgettable novels from the Narayan corpus, written over a period of fifty-two years between 1938 and 1990.
The Dark Room’, the first novel in this collection, is the story of the marital discord between Savitri, a traditional Hindu wife, and Ramani, her husband. Irked by Ramani’s excessive interest in Shanta Bai, an office colleague, Savitri retreats, literally and metaphorically, into a dark room, and attempts to redefine her identity within the confines of the family structure.
The semi-autobiographical ‘The English Teacher’ is about another young couple: Krishna, a teacher at the Albert Mission College, and his wife Susila. Their world is full of love and laughter, but when Susila passes away, Krishna must deal with the tragic blow and find a reason to go on living.
Sriram, the hero of ‘Waiting for the Mahatma’, is head over heels in love with the enchanting Bharati, but her primary loyalty is to Gandhiji and his ideals. Sriram becomes a follower of the Mahatma himself, but finds himself adapting the great man’s ideas to suit his own petty ends.
And, in ‘The World of Nagaraj’, Nagaraj’s life of small comforts is rudely interrupted by the arrival of his nephew Tim, and he must find a way to fend off the turbulence which threatens to disrupt his world for ever. This collection also includes ‘The Guide’, Narayan’s best-known novel which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958.
Its protagonist Raju takes a rollercoaster ride through life—he falls in love with the beautiful dancer Rosie, seduces her away from her husband, transforms her into a celebrity but then falls out with her. He loses the fortune he had made, finds himself in jail, and then—through a series of ironic circumstances—becomes a well-respected holy man.
The last in Penguin India’s series of collectors’ editions of R.K.
Narayan’s novels, Memories of Malgudi showcases the best of the master storyteller’s oeuvre. Narayan’s fictions about his imaginary South Indian town of Malgudi have shown India to the world in a way no other writing has.
—Anthony Thwaite The Dark Room R.K.
Narayan..
.has been compared to Gogol in England.
The comparison is apt, for Narayan is a writer of Gogol’s stature, with the same gift for creating a provincial atmosphere in a time of change..
. One is convincingly involved in this alien world without ever being aware of the technical devices Narayan so brilliantly employs.
—Anthony West, New Yorker The English Teacher An idyll as delicious as anything I have met in modern literature for a long time. The atmosphere and texture of happiness, and, above all, its elusiveness, have seldom been so perfectly transcribed.
—Elizabeth Bowen Waiting for the Mahatma The hardest of all things for a novelist to communicate is the extra-ordinary ordinariness of human happiness. Jane Austen, Soseki, Chekhov: a few bring it off.
Narayan is one of them. —Spectator The Guide ‘The Guide floats as gently as a lily pad on the surface of Indian life and yet suggests the depths beneath.
— Time ..
. A brilliant accomplishment.
..
in the first pages of The Guide we recognize the charity, the unstartled comprehension, and we settle down to a gracious but knowledgeable evening. — New York Times Book Review The World of Nagaraj Narayan’s genius, which plays gently over this novel, lies in his persuading us that the lives and characters of Malgudi represent substantial human nature, that what happens in India happens in Malgudi and what happens in Malgudi happens everywhere.
— Times Literary Supplement He is an enchanter. The World of Nagaraj is a world in a grain of sand.

They work night and day to satisfy the increasing demands of their clamouring public. In rare moments of relaxation, Srinivas occupies his mind puzzling over the futility of human existence, while Mr.
Sampath good-naturedly shoulders all the financial burdens. Without warming, The Banner suddenly folds.
Never a character to be foiled for long, Mr. Sampath becomes involved with Sunrise Productions and ropes in Srinivas to write the film scripts.
Unfortunately the glamorous life goes to Mr. Sampath's head and chaos ensues.
At times amusing, unfailingly perspicacious, R K Narayan has written a story of great distinction and charm. WHAT THE PRESS SAYS "There are writers - Tolstoy and Henry James to name two - whom we hold in awe, writers - Turgenev and Chekhov - for whom we feel a personal affection, other writers whom we respect - Conrad for example - but who hold us at a long arm's length with their 'courtly foreign grace.
' Narayan (whom I don't hesitate to name in such a context) more than any of them wakes in me a spring of gratitude, for he has offered me a second home. Without him I could never have known what it is like to be Indian.

When Vasu, in search of larger game, threatens the life of a temple elephant that Nataraj has befriended, complications ensue that are both comic and calamitous. A not unwelcome death occurs; murder is suspected and Nataraj and his friends point guilty fingers at each other and those around them.
The suspense never slackens in this bizarre, yet moving tale. This is the story of Nataraj, who earns his living as a printer in the enchanted world of Malgudi, that slumbering Southern Indian village whose peace has been often amusingly and outrageously disturbed by Narayan.
Nataraj and his close friends, a poet and a journalist, find their congenial days disturbed when Vasu, a powerful taxidermist; moves in with his stuffed hyenas and pythons, and brings his dancing women up the printer's private stairs. When Vasu, in search of larger game, threatens the life of a temple elephant that Nataraj has befriended, complications ensue that are both comic and calamitous.

Narayan. The term occurred to me when we started out on a tour of Karnataka, from Mysore, through Hunsur and Hassan, and returning to Mysore nearly one week later, having continuously journeyed up and down the ghats, the Konkan coast and Coorg, and never seeing a dry patch anywhere.
Green of several shades we saw, mountainsides lightly coated with verdure and fern, the dark foliage of trees rising hundreds of feet from the valley, light green, dark green, pale green, evergreen, and every kind of green shade, were offered for our delectation all through our circular tour of approximately a thousand kilometres.
