Shamanic Cosmos
This book is essentially the outcome of an International Symposium: October 1996, Venice, Italy. lncluding new investigative studies of both the traditional authentic shamanism and neo- shamanism, in diverse local situations: ranging from the frozen plains of Siberia to the jungles of Orissa, from the Himalayan valleys to the islands of Indonesia, the authors describe shamanic tranceflightsecstatic experience how a shaman envisions the true nature of the cosmos, beyond its trivial appearance and how, through his mysterious power, he can move among the dead men, spirits and gods.
An unbiased inquiry into the intriguing, yet heart-stirring, shamanic phenomena, it is certainly a work of absorbing interest to ethnologists, socialcultural anthropologists, shamanologists, historians of religion, and general readers alike. *

(less)End Of India (Paperback)
Over the last few years, however, he has had reason to feel that the worst, perhaps, is still to come. In this fierce, uncompromising book he shows us what few of us wish to see: why it is entirely likely that India will come undone in the foreseeable future.
Analysing the communal violence in Gujarat in 2002, the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, the burning of Graham Staines and his children, the targeted killings by terrorists in Punjab and Kashmir, Khushwant Singh forces us to confront the absolute corruption of religion that has made us among the most brutal people on earth. He also points out that fundamentalism has less to do with religion than with politics.
And communal politics, he reminds us, is only the most visible of the demons we have nurtured and let loose upon ourselves. Insurgencies in Kashmir and the North-East, caste wars in Bihar, scattered Naxalite movements, and the ghettoization of minorities are proof that our obsession with caste and regional and racial identity has also splintered the nation, perhaps beyond repair.
A brave and passionate book, The End of India is a wake-up call for every citizen concerned about his or her own future, if not the nation's
(less)Big Book Of Malice (Paperback)
For over four decades as Indias most widely-read columnist, he has commented on just about everything: religion, politics, our future, our past, prohibition, impotency, presidents, politicians, cricket, dog-haters, astrologers, the banning of books, the secret of 1ongevity..
.the list is endless.
Candid to the point of being outrageous, Khushwant Singh makes both his reader and subject wince. He writes unabashedly on nose picking, wife-bashing, bribing journalists, gender wars and the desires of an octogenarian; on Nehru and Edwina, Laloo, Bal Thackeray, Chandraswami and Sonia Gandhi, among host of others.
Khushwant Singhs Big Book of Malice brings together some of his nastiest and most irreverent pieces. Witty, sharp and brutally honest, this collection is certain to delight and provoke readers of all ages.
Good people can be crashing bores. Evil men who combine evil-doing with drunkenness, debauchery and making illicit money make more interesting characters because they pack their lives with action.
They do what most of us would like to do but do not have the guts to. Khushwant Singh

I often feel that this is how one should live life.' But then immediately my second mind snaps at me, saying, people like you from the previous generation were living life in a dream world, beautiful in its own way.
You believed that all the changes would take place on their own, without any struggle, without any efforts. But the fact is we cannot expect life to follow the calculative mathematical rules.
The cultural values of this era have changed tremendously. You mentioned the cultural values.
You were raised with the values suitable to the family life with its agricultural background. But today's generation is different.
They are living in a mechanical background. In the yester years, people were scared of god, religion.
They followed the artificial rules not sacredly but with a fear in their mind. This young generation today is not scared of any such thing.
Hence they do not care for it. Because the end of man is crystal clear.
Whatever, we do or however we live, what is going to remain behind us is just a pinch of ash. So, everyone aims at snatching, grabbing as much happiness as possible.
They have no other aim in their life. What you are saying is perfect principally, but nobody in today's world wants to give a damn to any principle.

The Parsi Religion
Religious merit consists, according to the teachings of the Master, not in austerities, not in sacrifices and offerings to the power of the evil, not in the cultivation of fugitive virtues, but in the daily exercise of the positive virtue and the diffusion of the good deeds. Zarathushtra's outlook on life was one symbolic of the essential unity of the universe.
Not surprising, therefore, that some of the sterling qualities of the Parsi community, which strike the other communities most, are its vitality, which has enabled it to withstand the vicissitudes of centuries; its adaptability to the changing circumstances; its loyalty; its industry and spirit of citizenship; and above all its philanthropy. These pages provide an insight into the fundamental principles of this religion and its code of ethics.
Written by an eminent Orientalist, the book has remained a standard classic for a long time. The Religion of the Parsis is substantially the same, in its general principles, at the present day, that it was in the ages of antiquity.
It is pre-eminently the religion in which good deeds are held up as the best and most acceptable offering to God. Religious merit consists, according to the teachings of the Master, not in austerities, not in sacrifices and offerings to the power of the evil, not in the cultivation of fugitive virtues, but in the daily exercise of the positive virtue and the diffusion of the good deeds.

Crossing Swords
Camp offers an inside look at the decision-making process of bishops at the diocesan level and draws on national survey research to examine prevailing Mexican attitudes toward religion, Christianity, and Catholicism both before, during, and after Mexico's constitutional changes on church-state relations. Incorporating comparative literature from the United States and Europe, Crossing Swords reaches a number of challenging conclusions about the interlocking relationship between religion and politics, casting light on both general theoretical arguments and on the peculiarities of the Mexican case.
A comprehensive and original look at a topic of importance well beyond Mexico, this book will be essential reading for scholars and students of religion generally as well as those involved with Latin America
